Meet Ellis Maunder
FRONT DESK SUPERVISOR | SEA CONTAINERS LONDON
Bell & Door Team Member > Guest Engagement Executive > Front Desk Supervisor
What motivated you to join Hospitality, and what brought you to Lore Group?
After finishing university, I felt directionless and spent a few years working in pubs in Southeast London. After some success and the accompanying stress, I realized I needed a change. I had never worked in central London before, so I applied for a position with the Bell and Door Team at Sea Containers, not fully understanding what the job was.
What was your first role here, and how has your career progressed over time?
My start at Sea Containers London began in the Bell and Door team, where I spent two years developing and was given the freedom to explore all the opportunities available. During this time, I gained experience working shifts in Guest Services, Room Service, Events Operations, Guest Engagement and Housekeeping. After two years of exploring different roles and applying myself I settled as a Front Desk Supervisor.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My day typically begins with a team handover, connecting with various departments and the business demands of the day. From there, it’s the usual routine of check-outs, check-ins, and team coordination but no two days are ever the same, and I really enjoy the variety and challenges.
What are some of your proudest achievements during your time here?
One of my proudest moments happened in the Guest Engagement department when Breathe Magic was in-house. I had the opportunity to greet many families upon arrival, and one particular family quickly connected with me. I spent a lot of time with them at the Guest Engagement desk, chatting and watching their daughter perform magic tricks. When it was time for them to leave, she asked for a picture to remember me by, and I can't imagine a greater achievement than that.
What opportunities have you had here to develop new skills or advance your career?
I've had the chance to work with different departments in the hotel, and that really opened my eyes to the possibilities in hospitality while helping me grow my skills in both front-of-house and back-of-house roles. The teams are full of passionate and experienced people who are always willing to share what they know. For example, the Pastry team gave me some great tips that have really improved my baking.
How has Lore Group supported your career growth?
Lore Group is an ever-evolving company, and I feel the more I commit to that journey the more opportunities for growth appear. Whether that is working in different departments, in-house training schemes or conversations with directors like our CEO or COO.
How would you describe the culture at Lore Group?
I’d describe the culture as genuinely supportive. The way admin and operations overlap leads to a lot of collaboration among teams in meaningful and creative ways. While "family" might be a strong term, the company’s values are deeply embedded in its structure, wherein no one truly feels out of reach.
What values or aspects of the Lore Group culture resonate most with you?
Discovery is one of our core values, I think it resonates with me because as a Front of House team member I need to discover something about our guests to make their experience unique. This can be time consuming, but I have never been discouraged from getting to know a guest and its easily one of my favourite parts of the job.
What advice would you give to someone looking to start or advance their career in this field?
You do not need a degree to do well in hospitality, it's about your mindset and approach to situations that will decide if you do well. That work ethic is in all of us and if you discover a passion for it the world of hospitality has plenty of colourful and eccentric opportunities.
What do you find most rewarding about your job?
Reading about how I made a difference in a guests stay and that they appreciated a part of our service. No higher badge of honour.
What’s your favourite thing about working here?
The community and the hustle of it all. There are plenty of little super bowls every day and I love being on the team for it.
